Wolverine and Winter Recreation – Volunteer Research Technician Positions 

Period: January 2 – March 30, 2015 Gulo project 2014

Location: Jackson, WY; Driggs & McCall, ID 

Number of Positions: 5-6 

Job Description:

Assist with a study on the potential effects of winter recreation activities on wolverine. The research technician will assist with all aspects of the project including: 

  • Maintenance of live traps and/or camera traps
  • Assisting with the handling and processing of live-captured wolverines, including anesthetizing and monitoring tranquilized animals; fitting of GPS-collars and collection of various biological measurements
  • Monitoring of VHF signals of tagged wolverines
  • Outreach and information sharing to interested public constituencies, including the general public and organization representing winter recreationists (snowmobile and back country skiing)
  • Monitoring of winter recreation activity, including parking lot counts, management of remote trail use counters, aerial surveys and mapping of recreation distribution and intensity
  • Distribution and collection of GPS units to volunteer winter recreationists, including snowmobilers and back-country skiers; associated outreach and information sharing
  • Extensive snowmobile use and long hours in extreme winter conditions
  • Extensive snowmobiling; also some snowshoeing and back-country winter travel likely
  • Data processing, management and input

Skill required or preferred for position: 

  • Comfortable with extreme winter conditions, including long hours in winter conditions in remote areas
  • Back-country and winter survival and first aid training
  • Snowmobile, backcountry ski and/or snowshoe experience
  • Backcountry ski experience and equipment required for Jackson placement
  • Snowmobile experience strongly preferred, including experience in trouble-shooting and maintenance for Driggs and McCall positions
  • Physical capability to hike in rugged terrain on snowshoes
  • Ability and experience working with diverse public and in outreach
  • Team and work management skills and experience
  • Willingness to work non-traditional hours

Housing provided, $600/mo reimbursement for expenses.
